Tiramisu – The Italian Food Dessert

Today Tiramisu is the most popular of Italian food desserts.  It graces the menu of nearly every Italian food restaurant.  However, its rise to fame has been meteoric; it wasn’t even invented until the 1970’s in the Veneto region of Italy.  It didn’t even gain widespread popularity until the early 1990’s.  It is a unique blend of ingredients that separately seem to not go together at all.  However, when correctly blended together they form one of the treasures of Italian food.

The first ingredient is Mascarpone cheese.  This cheese has very deep roots in Italian food.  It was made as far back as the 13th century in the region of Lombardy.  This cheese is concentrated milk cream and has a very high fat content, getting up to seventy-five percent.  It is a smooth and creamy cheese.  Traditionally it has been considered to be more of a winter dish and therefore shows up in more of the seasonal Italian food dishes.  This is mainly because of its high calories and the fact that when it was first produced there was no refrigeration and this delicate cheese does not keep well in hot temperatures.  Like many other Italian foods, the best Mascarpone cheese comes directly from Italy.  However, it you’re an Italian food lover making Tiramisu at home, there are plenty of makers of Mascarpone cheese in America.

Borough Food & Drink: the Shopper’s Special

I managed to work myself into a snit because we were early, our guests were late and the perfectly adorable young woman at the Borough Food & Drink’s desk  it’s an old fashioned double school desk — said we could not be seated until all our party…“No. No. No,” I said, refusing to let her finish my least favorite restaurant greeting, “We will be seated now. We willstart ordering as soon as we are seated.”

She smiled, not recognizing my hysteria, and urged us to be comfortable while waiting in the lounge or the bar. “I don’t want to be comfortable,” I hissed through clenched teeth, “I’ll stand right here.” I posted myself a few inches from her podium and her various official papers. Oh lord, the diva-ness of it. I was not exactly in a mood to appreciate a new and still tentative operation.

But at least I was near a window looking out at 22nd Street, which is how I happened to spot our slightly tardy friends, Bina and Georges, as they strolled past looking for a name on the restaurant’s awning and heading toward Broadway. I grabbed them; presented them to the head mistress and we settled at a bare wooden table on bare wooden chairs next to shelves of great-looking groceries in jars and tins.

I pretended not to mind when our perky waiter tilted his head to the right and announced he was Carmine and “I will be your server tonight.” It seemed a long while before he brought two covered jars of pickles…wonderful, lightly picked vegetables “from Gus’s pickles,” he said, unleashing the lids. The pickles were long gone when he showed up in another long while with the wine and poured me a taste.

I swirled and put the glass to my lips. And stopped. “I can’t taste wine,” I said. “My mouth is full of vinegar. Can you bring some bread?”

He shook his head, “That will be difficult.”

“No bread?” I looked all around. If this is not a restaurant, it’s a delicatessen, a market. No bread?

“Well, it will take a while,” he said. And it did. Fortunately, we were all being funny and interesting without really trying too hard…the conversation flowed.

But finally: “Can’t we just pour the wine?” my friends asked.

“What if it’s bad…? I can’t taste it with a mouth full of vinegar.”

All around us people were actually eating. Carmine returned, dropped a napkin-lined basket on the table with two slices of bread, touched my shoulder and turned away. “That’s all I could do.” Two slices of bread. I struggled to chew off a bite. Not just common, but stale as well.

I cleared my palate and swirled my red. The wine was fine. The medley of herrings from Russ & Daughters was lovely too, though meager for $14, and what was this plopped on top? Gorgeous warm pumpernickel bread.

I gave in. Okay, I thought, as I tasted Katz’s Delicatessen’s gargantuan and delectable matzo ball in shockingly bland soup that could have been heated up — okay. Now we know Zak Pelaccio can shop, but if it weren’t for Fatty Crab, we’d never know he can cook. And we can’t know what he could be thinking letting those weirdly watery clam flatbreads out of the kitchen. Or an unredeemable pea soup. House-smoked beef brisket arrived in a six-onion gravy that, alas, was no more remarkable than a one-onion gravy. And the Queen Anne’s rigatoni tossed with spring peas and chunks of Calabria Pork Store sausage under a melting half cup of lovely Creek Farms Toussaint cheese — was inexplicably dull.

Spoiled by a recent round of very good burgers, the Road Food Warrior was not annoyed by the BF&D cheeseburger — that caper aioli is a fine touch — but he wasn’t overly impressed even before he saw that the bacon was three-quarters fat. Yet the fries were great. And grilled hanger steak with spring herb chimichurri and crisp tobacco onions was a joy.

Eileen’s cheesecake is no match for the Brooklyn Diner’s. What can I say about a scoop of caramel ice cream for $2 with 75 cents worth of pecans? Provocative pricing.

Maybe you noticed that I haven’t once mentioned the unstoppable Jeffrey Chodorow trying yet another concept in this space, or dragged in the ghost of Rocco di Spirito or Caviar & Bananas. Nor have I confided that the last time we were here we had to sign a waiver that anything we said might wind up on TV. I thought I’d just give it to you without ribbons or party favors: a first tasting of the boutique fare.

It’s too soon to judge the kitchen, I grant. Still, can a Chinese dumpling carried out ever be as good as a dumpling en situ? Maybe a Borough sandwich would be a better choice. I get hungry just reading the options. Or maybe this is just an especially clever idea that isn’t going to work or will take a while to mature. The “gathering of great products” concept has its weird moments for me too, at BellaVitae on Minetta Lane, where the goodies come from Italy, but I have friends who love it.

I understand there’s a web site that tells waiters they get bigger tips if they touch the customers. I’m sure I just made Carmine nervous and he was not in love with me, but by dessert it was like a twitch. He couldn’t stop. If I counted the numbers of times he tapped my shoulder or squeezed my arm, the tip would have been fat enough to underwrite a weekend in the Hamptons.

Free Psp, PS2 and PS3 Games and Psp Compatible Movies Using Torrents

There are many sites currently online which offer free downloads for PSP games like PSP Blender and PSP Wizard but they still cost around 35.00$ and 40.00$ for a decent download speed. Though these sites are great sources paying is not preferable in any case so why not use torrents? Torrents are not only good for movies but also great for PSP and PS3 games as well. What people do very often is Google or search for “free psp game downloads” or “free psp games” and download malware or spyware unsuspectingly in the quest for games which are absolutely free. That poses a security risk to your PC which is unadvisable.

Torrent Clients

So how to get totally free games, well for starters download uTorrent (utorent.com) or any good BitTorrent client. After the initial preparations have been completed then go to a good torrent indexing service such as torrentz.com or mininova and search using basic keywords such as psp games, psp, ps3 games, ps2 games,ps2 or just ps3 as per the console you own. Running the torrent is quite simple, download the *.torrent file (example Stacked.torrent) open it using the torrent client, then click on the utorrent compatible list link on the indexer page, copy the trackers (these are services which index the file so more people can share, remember more people sharing means more peers and seeds, which translates into faster downloads). Paste these trackers using the advanced tab when the file is opened in the torrent client (there will be pre-existing trackers just remove them or paste over them for the best performance). Click ok and you are ready to go, the download starts, the download speed is usually 120KB for a 1Mbps connection (figures in per second) so a 100 MB file takes around 14-15 minutes to download (speeds are never constant).

ISO and CSO Formats

The best part about all this is that the files in the current torrent file can be viewed prior to downloading (just the names) and if the files are .iso or .cso (image files of PS games) you are on your way to go. Just copy them into the games folder of your memory stick and they will show up as games ready to play. For all the PS consoles the basic element to remember before you go through this procedure is that there has to be customised firmware and the Home Brew application previously installed for any of this to work and they also are available for download with instruction files on how to customise the firmware.

There are also PSP compatible movies which are pre-encoded to run directly by copying them into the movies folder of the PSP to which may be downloaded using the torrent trackers and files, so no more painstakingly converting movies or spending on expensive mp4 converters. The movies are already in the prescribed format so they may be directly played. The procedure for a movie torrent is the same as for games. The process requires a little more patience than direct downloading but hey its completely free and that makes this worth it.

Recreational Hobby Sports – A Quick Guide To Fun Sports For The Family

If you are feeling bored, listless, and out of shape, you need a new past time. Sports activities will get your blood pumping and help you get back into shape.
Not only will you be getting good exercise but you will be starting a valuable family past time. Sports activities are a great way to spend time with your kids. So get up off the couch, put down that soda, and get out in the yard for a little touch football.
If touch football is not for you, why not play a little kickball/soccer baseball with your kids. Set up a diamond similar to a baseball diamond. Now, the pitcher rolls a large soft ball, like a playground ball or soccer ball, on the ground to the “batter.” Only in kickball, the batter kicks the ball and runs to first base. Since the ball is soft, the fielding team can throw the ball at the runner to get him out. Since the kicker will almost always manage to kick the ball and foul balls are rare, this is a classic game to play with young kids and others who are not very athletic.
A fun family game that makes a good pastime sports activity is tetherball. This rousing game can be played with one or two people. Tetherball is called that because the ball is on a tether – it is on a rope tied at the top of a pole. The ball hangs about hand level. The object is to hit the ball and make the rope wrap around the pole. The two players attempt to make the ball go different directions. If you have never played tetherball, you should give it a try. It is really fun…And it really gets you moving! (and laughing!)
Sand volleyball may have started on the beaches, but many towns are now installing sand volleyball courts in their public parks. The smaller kids can sit in a safe place and play with their sand toys while Mom, Dad, and the older kids hit a beach ball or volleyball back and forth over a net. The sand feels good on bare feet (but not so good inside your shoes!) The kids will enjoy this pastime sport.
A cross between volleyball and tennis that many families enjoy is badminton. In this game, the object is to use lightweight rackets to volley a “birdie” back and forth over a net. The birdie looks like a little plastic funnel attached to a firm rubber ball. You hold the birdie by the plastic and drop it onto your racket to serve to the other team. Badminton moves slower than tennis and is a leisurely way to get moving with the kids. You’ll get some exercisethough!
Kids are naturally energetic and active, making pastime sports activities extremely attractive to them. Since parents need to be spending more quality time with their kids, as well as needing to get more exercise too, these vigorous games are a good idea for everyone. Some say that the family that plays together stays together. This could be so, since exercise gets positive hormones flowing in your mind, putting you and everyone else in a better mood. Don’t get so competitive that your family pastime sports cease to be fun. Just volley that ball or birdie for fun and exercise.

Guitar Lesson: Practicing Or Playing Music?

What is most important as you try to learn to play guitar? Technical guitar exercises or playing music? What areas should you focus on as you try to use your practicing time as effective as possible?
Could it be that both these areas are important and should go hand in hand?
You could practice in various ways and you could practice many various things as you try to learn playing guitar. You are probably already identifying yourself in a niche of guitar players. Even if you are not you will experience sooner or later that different approaches will lead you in different directions.
For example, if you only learn small parts (the coolest parts) of famous songs you will end up with knowing small parts of songs. Obvious, but that is very common among beginning guitar players. If you only practice this way you will of course miss the long term development as a guitarist.
You wanted to become one type of guitarist but ended up becoming another type of guitarist. Why does things like that happen?
Probably because we know that what we saw we will reap but do not realize that this applies to guitarists as well!
If you never practice skill exercises in your guitar playing you will not develop you skill very much. If you don’t want to become a proficient guitar player but only want to sing songs you can relax and develop your time to learning songs.
If you really know what you want it is much easier to determine what exercises you will need.
If you have a somewhat vague idea about what type of guitarist you want to become I would suggest that you balance you guitar practice by choosing both melodies and other musical exercises and also skill building guitar exercises.
If you only practice speed by learning scales, arpeggios, licks and other technique building exercises it is an imminent risk that you will sooner or later get fed up with practicing because of the lack of stimulating musical content.
It can actually be a great investment in your musical development to take some time off every now and then by going to a concert or listening to other music that will inspire you.
Yes, you are right, you will not practice your fingers, but music and playing guitar has to be a joyful experience for you if you are to inspire and lift others when you perform. You will gain so much by filling yourself with inspiring music that it will compensate for missed skill building exercises.
Music is the key in this discussion. It has to be the basis for all other guitar playing activities. Otherwise you will as before mentioned lose interest in the activity.
Sometimes I remember my first steps learning to play guitar and I remember that I did not think in terms of becoming a better guitarist than my friends or being the fastest guitarist in the world or a lot of other disturbing unmusical considerations. I was just enjoying the music I created.
I guess that keeping this feeling of why I wanted to learn to play guitar in the first place in vivid memory will help me not to be too carried away with only technical exercises.
